What I am about to share with you is probably the easiest, cheapest and healthiest way to make your home smell like Fall. I’ll admit, I must have lived under a rock or something, because I had no idea what Potpourri was until my husband mentioned it. In my defense, I’m South African, where I come from, we don’t celebrate Fall. However, I have been sucked in by the American culture, I am a sucker for beautiful Fall scents. I’m always stocked up on Candles and essential oils. My home smells good throughout the year and I take a lot of pride in that. But Potpourri is a great alternative for Candles and oils, they sometimes have toxins in them that aren’t good for us to inhale. So on days I don’t feel like lighting a candle or using my essential oils, I make Potpourri instead.
What is potpourri?
Potpourri is a mixture of dried, fragrant plant materials, often including flowers, leaves, and spice that is typically used to create a pleasant and long-lasting scent in a room. Just like how cooking ingredients release aromas when heated, the potpourri releases its scents naturally into the air overtime, making your space smell lovely.
Fall Stovetop Potpourri ingredient
- 1 Apple
- 1 Orange
- 3 Cinnamon sticks
- 1/4 cup cranberries
- 1 whole nutmeg (you can grate them a bit)
- 1 tsp Vanilla
Slice the apple and oranges.
In a Saucepan, add the apple slices, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cranberries, and nutmeg.
Pour in enough water to cover the ingredients.
Add the vanilla extract to the pot.
Place the saucepan on the stovetop and set it to low heat.
Allow the mixture to simmer gently. As it heats, the ingredients will release their delightful scents into your home.
Remember to keep an eye on the potpourri, ensuring there is always enough water to prevent it from drying out. You can enjoy the cozy fragrance throughout your home as it simmers on the stovetop.
