Becoming a Straight Natural

If you’ve been thinking long and hard about becoming a straight natural, this might be your sign to transition. Becoming a straight natural isn’t a decision you make overnight; a lot of thought goes into it. And that’s why you came across this article, not to necessarily talk you into transitioning, but to share what my experience has been like since before using any type of heat on my hair to now confidently and sparingly using it.

What is a Straight Natural?

A straight natural is someone who styles their hair using heat tools like a blowdryer or flat iron so their hair appears straight. This term is typically used by people who have naturally curly or coily hair and choose to wear their hair straight most of the time.

Best products for straight natural hair

I would advise you to research the type of products that you’re going to use on your hair, know your hair type, and always look up the ingredients of the products that you purchase. To set yourself up for success when starting your straight natural journey, you’re going to need the following:

Hair Masque/Deep Conditioner

Think of a deep conditioner as nutritious food for your hair, it helps your hair reach its full potential. I use OUIA fine to medium hair treatment masque, and my hair feels amazing. It feels clean, healthy, and strong after a wash day. OUIA also has a treatment masque for thicker hair. It might take a couple of tries before you find a deep conditioner that works for you. Your hair should feel soft and healthy after wash day.

Deep condition once a week or every two weeks, depending on your hair texture and how much heat you use on your hair.

Shampoo and Conditioner

Find a shampoo that will reduce breakage, promote stronger strands, and clean your scalp after a long week of using products. I use Dove Shampoo and Conditioner. The shampoo cleans my scalp thoroughly while the conditioner moisturises my hair and makes it silky and smooth.

Oil treatment

I do a Hair oiling treatment a day before my wash day. I put Rosemary oil in my scalp and the entire length of my hair, focusing on the ends, and allow it to sit overnight. This helps keep my hair moisturized.

Heat Protectant

A heat protectant is a product applied to the hair before any heated styling tool is used. It helps prevent hair damage by forming a barrier between the hair and the source of heat, and prevents moisture loss. I use the Chi heat protectant spray. You don’t want to skip this step, you must protect your hair from heat damage.

Hair growth tips for the natural girlies

  • Trim your ends every couple of weeks to prevent any split ends
  • Use minimal heat on your hair, use styling tools like rollers, and overnight rods to curl your hair.
  • Too much product/oil will weigh your hair down; be careful with how much you use.
  • Avoid using elastic hair ties that pull your hair; rather, use hair clips or wear your hair down for minimal hair damage.
  • Healthy and strong hair starts with what you eat. Drink water and eat healthy meals.

Ultimately, starting the straight natural journey is different for every person. You might not get it right when you first start, but that’s the beauty of it. It’s like learning to do your makeup for the first time. As long as you figure it out as you learn more about your hair and what works for it. You might change products a couple of times until you get the one that ultimately works for you. You will eventually get it right. Just remember to wear your natural hair loud and proud! You got this.
