A positive Clearblue pregnancy test on the bed

You just found out you’re pregnant, now what?

The Moment Everything Changes

You’ve just taken a pregnancy test, waited for what felt like the longest 5 minutes of your life, and it ends up being positive. You’re staring at the test, sitting on the bathroom floor in disbelief because your life is about to change.

If you’re numb, not sure how to feel, that’s completely normal. You can be excited, feel fear, panic, joy, or even grief for the “before”. It’s okay. Everyone’s experience is different. Yours doesn’t have to be picture perfect.

This post isn’t about pressure or perfection, it’s about pausing and breathing. It’s not about getting ahead of yourself and already thinking far out in the future; it’s about you, right now, and what is happening in this moment.

You just found out that you’re pregnant, now what?

2. First Pause Before You Panic (or Celebrate)

Take a Breath – You don’t need a 9-month plan yet

What to do when you find out you’re pregnant. You’re probably going to want to Google everything: symptoms, what to expect during pregnancy, how far along you might be. That is completely normal. You will have questions throughout your pregnancy, and sometimes Google might help.

You don’t have to make big decisions or announcements as soon as you find out; don’t feel any pressure to. Pause, take a moment, process what is happening. You don’t need to rush anything, I promise you have time.

Mixed emotions are completely normal at this time. If this were an unplanned pregnancy, you probably have a million questions and emotions rushing through. This is big news, so of course, you’re going to have all the feelings about it. Even if the baby is planned, you may have those ‘what if’ thoughts. This might also be your first pregnancy; give yourself grace.

The following might help with grounding you:

  • Sitting with your feelings
  • Journaling
  • Crying, laughing, staring at a wall – whatever comes naturally.

3. Confirming the Pregnancy (Without Overwhelm)

Next practical step: Confirming what you already know

The first practical step to take is to take an at-home test. Once a positive test appears, you will likely want to confirm it with a doctor. You don’t have to make that call immediately; depending on the doctor, you might even have to wait a couple of weeks before they see you. There’s no need to panic; this is a normal occurrence.

Choose a provider that feels safe and supportive:

  • OB-GYN
  • Midwife
  • Family doctor

4. Telling Someone you’re pregnant (Or Not) Is a Personal Choice

You don’t owe anyone this news yet

I understand the pressure of having to tell your partner, family, and friends immediately. If that is something that gets you excited and you wish to do, by all means, go ahead. This is exciting news to share!

However, if you would rather wait and take the time to enjoy this news alone or with your partner for a while, that is completely okay as well. Waiting is okay. Keeping it private is okay. This is your news to share when you’re ready to share it.

5. Your body might start to feel different – or not at all

Early pregnancy looks different for everyone

You may start to feel a few changes and experience early symptoms during your pregnancy, or you may not. Everyone’s body and experience are different. Early pregnancy emotions and early pregnancy symptoms come with being pregnant; it’s nothing out of the norm. This is to help you avoid panicking, especially when you just found out that you’re pregnant.

These are common symptoms that women experience during the early stages:

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Sore Breasts
  • No Symptoms at all

There’s no need to panic when you experience either of these; it’s completely normal. Listen to your body and trust your body; you don’t need to compare timelines. Remember to stay hydrated, get plenty of rest, and nourish your body.

6. The emotional side no one warns you about

The Feelings are just as real as the baby

There are so many emotions that come up when you just find out you’re pregnant. There’s fear for the future, the baby’s health, and your future plans. There might be guilt, especially if this is an unplanned pregnancy; are you ready to be a mom? Do you even want to be a mom? Will you be able to do this? You may even grief for the life you imagined. The plans that you had for your life may not have included having a baby, or at least not yet. You may feel a deep sadness because of that. You might have a sudden protectiveness over your baby.

There’s no way to control what and how you really feel. Welcome those emotions, feel them deeply, and pick yourself up once you’re ready. There’s going to be fear, uncertainty, doubt, grief, and you may also experience excitement, immediate attachment, hope, empowerment, and fulfillment. Welcome those feelings as well. There’s no right or wrong in this.

Talk to someone that you can trust, your partner, a friend, a therapist, or your mom. Someone who will help you process your emotions with no judgment.

7. What you actually need to do in the first few weeks (Simple Checklist)

An early pregnancy checklist

  • Schedule a prenatal appointment
  • Start or continue prenatal vitamins (Olly Prenatal tastes great, and is easy on your stomach)
  • Rest when your body asks
  • Eat what you can (and release food guilt)
  • Limit Google or Chat GPT spirals
  • Protect your mental health

8. You’re allowed to take this one day at a time

When you just found out you’re pregnant, uncertainty is part of the beginning. It does get better with time; confidence comes later on, not on day one. You are not behind, you are not failing, and you are allowed to take this slowly.

Motherhood comes with a lot; you’re not expected to show up perfect. Just like your first year of marriage, take it one day at a time. You learn so much along the way. Right now, you might feel like you have no idea how to navigate or where to start, but things just fall into place. The more you learn about this new journey, the more confident you become in your capabilities. You’ve got this.
