My Go-To Tea for Period Cramps: Raspberry Leaf & Hibiscus

The Tea I make when my Period comes around

What to drink for period cramps? If you’re a female, you’ve probably searched this at least once in your life. And if you struggle with heavy cramping, then you’ve probably searched this an unhealthy number of times. I struggled with cramping, which confirms I’ve definitely done both, and that’s when I discovered Raspberry leaf tea to help me soothe my cramps.

Menstrual cramps are a nightmare, and I’m the type to try natural remedies before I consider anything else. I mostly drink warm and comforting drinks during my cycle, but this drink here is different; I drink it leading up to my period because it’s cold. Just a reminder that cold drinks during your period make the cramping worse.

Why I started making Raspberry Leaf & Hibiscus Tea

I spend a lot of time on TikTok, and one day I was scrolling for a delicious tea recipe when a video popped up of a girl talking about the benefits of Raspberry leaf and Hibiscus tea. All she had to mention was period cramps, and that was enough for me to want to try it. She listed the benefits, which made me curious.

Raspberry Leaf Tea:
  • Eases menstrual comfort
  • Helps you stay hydrated
  • Contains antioxidants
  • Naturally caffeine-free
Hibiscus Flowers:
  • Contains antioxidants
  • Regulates menstrual cycles
  • Reduces inflammation in the uterus
  • Promotes muscle relaxation

I grew up drinking a lot of tea, specifically Rooibos tea from South Africa. I used to drink only traditional black tea with a splash of milk; only recently have I started drinking fruit teas. Since I am already a tea drinker, I thought, why not make a homemade tea to help ease my period cramps?

Why I add Hibiscus

  • Hibiscus adds a beautiful color to the tea.
  • It gives the drink a slightly tart, fruity flavor.
  • It balances the more earthy raspberry flavor
  • The tea looks pretty in a glass.
  • It tastes so much better with honey and sparkling water.

  • Hibiscus flowers

  • Hot Water
  • Lime Juice
How I make Raspberry Leaf and Hibiscus Tea for Period Cramps:

Step 1: Heat your water.

Step 2: Add honey to a large jug.

Step 3: Add your boiling water and stir until it dissolves.

Step 4: Add your Raspberry leaf tea and let it steep.

Step 5: Remove the tea and add the hibiscus flowers.

Step 6: Let it cool, then refrigerate until cold.

What I like about this tea

When I made the tea and tried it for the first time, I loved it. It has a sweet-tart taste, and although it may not be for everyone, I quite liked it. I make sure to add extra honey to mine because I prefer the sweeter taste over the tangy taste. It’s a perfect blend of the two.

I also love that the ingredients are mostly clean products. Organic Raspberry Leaf tea, Hibiscus Flower, Honey, Sparkling Water, and Lime.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Herbal teas aren’t a guaranteed treatment for menstrual cramps.
  • Everyone responds differently to the tea.
  • If your period is severe, worsening, or interfering with your everyday life, it’s worth talking with a healthcare professional.
  • Raspberry leaf isn’t appropriate for everyone, so check with a healthcare professional if you’re unsure.

Make yourself a little period-care ritual

There are many ways to relieve period cramps, not just by drinking tea, so take extra care of yourself during that time of the month. A few things that have helped me over the years include a heating pad. Putting heat directly where the pain is relieves so much of it. Wear comfortable pajamas if you’re home; loose, soft-material pajamas make a huge difference. Grab your favorite cozy pajamas; staying warm when you’re cramping is crucial.

Watch your favorite comfort show or read your favorite book; maybe grab a snack, a little chocolate, and enjoy bed rotting for the rest of the day. Give yourself permission to rest.

A small thing that makes those days feel a little better

Raspberry leaf tea for period cramps is not some miracle drink; it’s one small thing you enjoy reaching for as you prepare for your upcoming period. If you’re always looking for another drink to make at home, you might want to try my homemade chai concentrate next.

Equipment

  • 1 32oz Jug or Pitcher For Brewing the tea
  • 1 Spoon For Stirring
  • 1 Glass For Serving
  • 1 Straw Optional for serving

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup Honey Add more for a sweeter taste
  • 3 teabags Raspberry Leaf Tea
  • 1/2 cup Hibiscus flowers
  • As desired Sparkling water To finish, you top the tea with sparkling water
  • As desired Lime Juice To finish, to top the tea with lime juice

Instructions

  • Bring your water to a boil. While the water is heating, prepare a large jug or pitcher for your tea.
  • Pour the honey into the bottom of your jug. Adding it first makes it easier to dissolve once the hot eater is added.
  • Carefully pour the boiling water into the jug over the honey. Give it a good stir until the honey has completely dissolved into the water.
  • Add your raspberry leaf tea and let it steep for 7 to 10 minutes. This gives the tea time to develop its flavor.
  • Remove the raspberry leaf tea, then add the hibiscus flowers to the jug. Let them steep until the tea reaches the flavor and color you like.
  • Allow the tea to cool to room temperature, then store it in the refrigerator. Chill until completely cold and ready to serve.
  • Pour the chilled tea over ice, and top with as much sparkling water as you'd like. Finish with a squeeze of fresh lime juice, give it a stir, and enjoy.
